Rewinding Oregon State’s 10-0 loss to Kentucky in Lexington Super Regional Game 1 (2024)

Kentucky blasted Oregon State in every way possible, holding the Beavers to a season-low one hit in a 10-0 win Saturday night in Game 1 of the Lexington Super Regional.

The teams meet at 6 p.m. Sunday for Game 2. A win sends the Wildcats to the College World Series, while OSU can force a deciding game Monday by beating Kentucky.

NINTH INNING

OSU: Hainline struck out, then Kasper struck out. Guerra pops up, and it’s over. Oregon State faces an elimination game at 6 p.m. Sunday. (0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors)

EIGHTH INNING

UK: Lopez grounds out to the pitcher. Daly hits a double into the left-center gap. Nicholson and McCarthy struck out as Palmer keeps the Wildcats off the scoreboard in the eighth. (0 runs, 1 hit, 0 errors, 1 left)

OSU: Jackson Nove reliefs Pooser. It’s a 1-2-3 ining for Nove, as McDowell and Turley strike out. Macias pops up to third to end the eighth. (0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors)

SEVENTH INNING

UK: Caraway goes to third, and Weber to catcher for Oregon State. Pitre walked, then stole second. Burkes hits one off the fist just over short and into left for a single. Runners at first and third. Lopez struck out, but Burkes stole second. Runners at second and third with one out. Mundt leaves, replaced by AJ Hutcheson. Daly sacrifices to the pitcher, Pitre scores, though it takes a replay to confirm as it’s a bang-bang play at the plate. Burkes to third, and Daly at first. Burkes scores when Weber throws into left field trying to pick him off a third. 5-0 Cats. Then Nicholson blasts a two-run homer to right center and it’s 7-0 Kentucky. McCarthy is hit by a pitch, as Hutcheson’s throw almost goes behind McCarthy. After conferring, it’s ruled McCarthy didn’t make an attempt to get out of the way. He’s back at the plate, but he’s back on base a few pitches later on a walk. McCoy walks, and there are runners at first and second, still one out.

Hutcheson leaves without getting an out. Coming out of the pen is Noah Ferguson. Oregon State seems lost, as McCarthy and McCoy easily pull off a double steal. It gets worse. Smith strikes out swinging, but Weber commits a passed ball, then throws wildly to first and Smith is safe. McCarthy scores to make it 8-0. Runners at the corners with one out. Make it 9-0, as Ferguson throws a wild pitch to score McCoy. Weber is having one rough seventh inning. Waldschmidt walks. Pitre walks, and ball four is a wild pitch that allows Smith to score. Runners at first and second, one out. Another call to the bullpen, as Palmer replaces Ferguson. Pitre is throw out trying to steal second. Waldschmidt to third. Burkes pops up to mercifully end the inning. (7 runs, 2 hits, 2 errors, 1 left)

OSU: Guerra flies out to right. Trent Caraway pinch hits for Trosky. He walks. Talt pinch hits for Smith. He strikes out. Bazzana flies out. Beavers offense through 7 is a lone single. (0 runs 0 hits 0 errors 1 left)

UK: Nicholson singles to center, his second hit of the game. McCarthy dumps one over short and into left for a single. Runners at first and second. May’s night is finished, as Joey Mundt comes out of the bullpen. May gives up seven hits and strikes out five in 5+ innings. McCoy hits a sacrifice bunt to Mundt, and his only option is first. Runners move to second and third. Smith struck out. Waldschmidt flies out to left. Beavers dodge a big inning. (0 runs, 2 hits, 0 errors, 2 left)

OSU: Macias, who starts out 3-0, strikes out. Hainline flies out to center. Kasper grounds out to short. Beavers have one hit through six. Going to be a short super regional if the offense doesn’t pick up. (0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors)

FIFTH INNING

UK: McCoy with a leadoff single to center. Smith is hit by a pitch. Runners at first and second. Waldschmidt walks on four pitches to load the bases. Mundt warming in the bullpen. Pitre doubles to right center, drives in McCoy and Smith to make it 3-0. Runners at second and third with no out. Probably time to lift May. Burkes pops up to second for the first out. Lopez strikes out. Daly flies out to left. So May bounces back after a costly start to the inning. (2 runs, 1 hit, 0 errors, 2 left)

OSU: Guerra hit by a pitch to lead off. Trosky hits back to the pitcher. Pooser’s throw to second is wild and into center field. Both are safe with no out. Smith, trying to bunt, eventually strikes out. Runners hold at first and second. Bazzana walks on five pitches to load the bases. McDowell tries a squeeze bunt, but it’s fouled off.
