Michael Mosley’s TV career and family as the doctor goes missing in Greece (2024)

Dr Michael Mosley is a familiar face on British TV thanks to his regular appearances in health documentaries and programmes.

Family members are concerned for the medical professional, 67, who has gone missing while on holiday in Greece.

His wife, Dr Clare Bailey, raised the alarm when he didn’t return from a coastal walk on Wednesday.

A search is underway and the news will undoubtedly sadden the many viewers who have tuned into his programmes over the years.

Who is Michael Mosley?

Michael Mosley is a British journalist, TV presenter and producer. He was born on March 22 1957 and is currently 67 years old.

Dr Mosley graduated from medical school but changed profession by joining a trainee assistant producer scheme at the BBC in 1985.

It was at the corporation that he went on to enjoy an illustrious career working on programmes such as The Human Face, Blood and Guts, The Story of Science and engineering series Inventions That Changed The World alongside Jeremy Clarkson.

Some of his most notable documentaries include 2012’s The Truth About Exercise, The Genius of Invention released in 2013, and more recently, the three-part 2021 docuseries Lose a Stone In 21 Days for Channel 4. He also fronted the documentary Who Made Britain Fat?

Dr Mosley has occasionally gone to the extreme for his work, including living with tapeworms in his guts for six weeks for the documentary Infested! Living With Parasites on BBC Four. He has investigated many other subjects in his educational shows including painkillers, meat-eating and E-cigarettes.

Other TV appearances include ITV’s This Morning and BBC One’s The One Show.

He is currently the host of the BBC’s Just One Thing health podcast and writes a column for the Daily Mail.

Who is Michael Mosley’s wife?

Dr Mosley has been married to Clare Bailey, a GP, since 1987 and the couple met on his first day at medical school.

They are parents of four children; sons Dan, Alex and Jack, as well as daughter Kate.

Sharing an insight into fatherhood, Dr Mosley said of his daughter while speaking with The Sydney Morning Herald: ‘Our daughter Kate is exactly like her mother – sociable and very likeable.’

Like her husband, Dr Mosley’s wife Clare is a published author having written books about dieting.

Her most recent, Fast 800 Treats Recipes, was released in April 2024.

When did Michael Mosley become a doctor?

Dr Mosley first worked as a banker in the City of London before going into medicine with the intention of becoming a psychiatrist. He studied at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School, which is now part of UCL.

What is the Michael Mosley ‘800’ diet and how does it work?

In 2015, Dr Mosley released the book, The 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet, which details a meal plan based on a low-carb Mediterranean diet plus fasting.

It centres around the idea of cutting out carbs and replacing it with greens and coloured vegetables, an abundance of protein and a small amount of healthy fats. It’s also recommended that the diet includes some dairy products in order to keep the person full for a longer period time.

The three main stages of the diet includes limiting calories to 800-a-day for up to eight weeks, a phase known as BSD 5:2 where the dieter eats low carbs for five days and two days of fasting. The final stage is committing to the low-carb diet with intermittent fast days, known as the BSD Way of Life.
